Winning the Fan Favorite VR Game at the 2018 Gamers’ Choice Awards, Beat Saber is a virtual reality rhythm game that is keeping up with the trends in the game industry. Developed by Beat Games, formerly known as Hyperbolic Magnetism, the game has been released in early access for HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Windows Mixed Reality on PC, and PlayStation VR. It became the highest rated game on Steam in less than a week after its early access release.
Story: As the game is a simple rhythm game, it does not have a story of any sort.
Play Style: The game includes a number of songs with each having 4-5 levels of difficulty. A stream of approaching blocks are presented to the player synchronized with the song’s beats. The player uses motion controllers to wield two shields to slash the blocks according to their marked direction and type. There are also mines that the player must not hit and obstacles that the player’s head must avoid. The sabers are colored red and blue (red for left and blue for right), and the blocks must be slashed according to the color scheme.
Audience: Music lovers will love this game more than anything. The beats are on point and it delivers the satisfaction of playing an actual instrument. However, if you do not possess or have access to a VR system, you cannot play this game. So the audience targeted is VR players.
Platforms: The game is available on Microsoft Windows and PlayStation VR.
Verdict: Beat Saber is one of the most enjoyable games we have played. The synchronization of your movements according to the beat is an extremely satisfying feeling. The game is proof of how progress in technology is matched by the gaming industry’s innovation. Maverick IGS congratulates Beat Games on their early-on success, and expects their future projects to be bigger and better.
